Benches clear as Yankees fail to secure elusive series win over Rays TAMPA — The Yankees started their long road trip with a series loss, as the team fell to the Rays, 7-4, on Sunday at Tropicana Field. The Yankees, who have won just one series since July began, blew a 4-2 lead with two outs in the sixth inning when an erratic Ian Hamilton gave up a single and hit a batter before Randy Arozarena picked up an infield hit. Harold Ramírez then poked one just over the head of Gleyber Torres, who didn’t get the best read on the two-run, game-tying blooper.“I think if Gleyber has a better read of it, then he opens and runs to it and gives himself a better chance,” Aaron Boone said.Brandon Lowe then gave the Rays the lead with his own two-run single off of Wandy Peralta. Hamilton was charged with all four runs that scored in the sixth.“It was tough, but I’m trying to make pitches,” Hamilton said. “They were on ‘em.”The Yankees had already overcome one rocky frame, as a first-inning stolen base ...

Impeachment inquiry of Biden a ‘natural step forward,’ McCarthy says

Impeachment inquiry of Biden a ‘natural step forward,’ McCarthy says PHOENIX — Speaker Kevin McCarthy suggested Sunday that an impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden was becoming more likely, calling it “a natural step forward” as Congress soon ends its summer break and House Republicans seek to expand their investigative powers.McCarthy, R-Calif., has so far avoided committing to an impeachment vote or offering a timeline for possible action. Some House Republicans are eager to go after Biden over claims of financial misconduct involving his son Hunter, but the Democratic president has not been shown to have done anything wrong.Meanwhile, McCarthy said passing a short-term spending bill to keep the government running past the end of September would ensure that investigations of Hunter Biden could continue, a pitch directed at conservatives worried a bipartisan deal with Senate Democrats would not cut enough spending. The stopgap measure would buy time to work out a longer-term budget deal before mandatory spending cuts that neither p...

Trump voters and donors unbothered by debated dodge, fueled by arrests Former President Donald J. Trump has been arrested four times since he left office and declined to participate in his party’s first debate, but Republican voters seem to know who they want, and it’s Trump, according to another round of polls. After skipping the party debate Wednesday evening and despite his arrest by authorities in Georgia on Thursday, recent polling and fundraising indicate that Trump continues to maintain his grip on the GOP.According to Trump’s campaign, on the Friday following his surrender to authorities in Fulton County the 45th president had his best fundraising day of the 2024 campaign. His jail mugshot, plastered on campaign memorabilia and shared across the one-term chief executive’s social media accounts, is apparently quite appealing to conservative donors.“Close to $20 [million] raised in the last 3 weeks, coinciding with indictment in DC and the Atlanta mugshot,” Trump 2024 campaign spokesman Steven Cheung claimed Saturday via X, the social media ...

Ukraine’s best high jumper wins gold for her country at world championships BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The war with Russia hangs over the Olympic world these days as much as anywhere else. So perhaps it was fitting that the last person standing on the last event of the final day of the track and field world championships hailed from Ukraine. And perhaps it was perfect that Yaroslava Mahuchikh closed out that event with a gold medal hanging from her neck.Ukraine’s best high jumper, a symbol of hope to her war-torn country and defiance to those who would see it ruined, won a championship Sunday. She jumped 2.01 meters (6 feet, 7 inches) to close out a riveting evening on the track — and in the field.“Finally, I have my gold medal,” she said of the country’s first world title since 2013, when the meet was held in Moscow. “And it’s really extra important for my country right now.”Mahuchikh’s final jump of the evening came only seconds after hurdles champion Femke Bol of The Netherlands, who fell and cost her country a medal at the end of th...
